Exploring Human
Evolution
|
Spiritual science shows, however,
that during life between death and rebirth man
encounters certain beings. Just as here he meets
the many beings of the various kingdoms of nature,
so after death he meets the beings of higher
hierarchies and certain elemental beings. If a
person goes through life without any sense of
judgment, this is due to the fact that between
death and rebirth he was unable to meet those
beings who could have given him the appropriate
forces to enable him to be morally and
intellectually effective in this life. But the
possibility and the ability to meet certain beings
between death and rebirth depends on the last
life. If during earthly life we do not occupy
ourselves with thoughts relating to the
supersensible, if during our life we have been
completely immersed in the external sense world,
if we only lived in our intellect inasmuch as it
was directed to the physical world, then we make
it impossible for ourselves between death and a
new birth to encounter certain beings and to
receive abilities from them for a subsequent life.
The realm beyond remains dim and dark for us, and
we are unable to find the forces of higher
hierarchies in the darkness. Man, then between
death and a new birth, passes by those beings from
whom he should receive forces for his next earthly
life.

Gondishapur
established by Shapur I,
and housed the oldest
known teaching hospital,
a library and a university.
----
But in the Academy of
Gondishapur it was also
taken hold of by that
Oriental spiritual stream
which we may describe as
Arabism. Arabism in
one aspect of its nature,
is a premature unfolding
of the Spiritual Soul.
Through the soul-life working
prematurely in the
direction of the Spiritual Soul,
the possibility was given in
Arabism for a spiritual
wave to go forth,
extending over Africa to
southern and western
Europe, and filling certain
men of Europe with an
intellectualism that should
not properly have come
until ma later stage. In the
seventh and eighth
centuries, southern and
western Europe received
spiritual impulses which
ought to have come only
in the age of the
Spiritual Soul.
This spiritual wave was
able to awaken the
intellectual life in man,
but not the deeper founts
of experience whereby the
soul penetrates into
the world of Spirit.
And now, when in the fifteenth
to nineteenth
centuries man exercised
his faculty of Knowledge,
he could but reach down
to those levels of soul
where he did not yet
impinge upon the spiritual
world.
Arabism, entering into
the spiritual life of Europe,
held back the souls of
men, in Knowledge, from
the Spirit-world.
Prematurely it brought that
intellect into activity
which was only able to
apprehend the outer world
of Nature.
----
Soratic impulse: the
intention of Sorat for the year
666 was to deluge
humanity with a knowledge
and a culture which the
primal gods had intended
for men only during the
third millennium, by
bestowing the
consciousness soul prematurely on
Man around 666, thereby
and side-tracking normal
development by mingling
the intellectual soul's
development with that of
the consciousness soul.
Geniuses would have
arisen with inspired
knowledge that mankind
will only have around
2493, and delivered great
advances to humanity's
unbalanced immature soul
moods of that period
(1918-10-11-GA184).
----
The plan of the Sorat
was immediately to inspire
the academy's genius
scholars to the discovery of
every insight and
invention that humanity would,
in the normal progression
of evolution, find over
the period stretching
to about 3,600 AD, to the end
of the era Rudolf
Steiner designates as the era of
the Consciousness
Soul, which started in 1413AD.
Had this plan
succeeded, the entire future
developmental
potential of humanity would have
been consumed in 666 AD. Humanity would have
achieved a tremendous
brilliance, but it would
have been unable to
develop beyond what
would otherwise have
been achieved by 3,600 AD.
In other words, humanity's
cosmic future would
have been forfeit.
This catastrophe
was averted by the activity of
the Christ Being, who
collided with the dark
powers. What
resulted instead was the religion
of Islam. Thanks to
Mohammed and his followers,
the works were
gummed up, and, consequently,
the Two-Horned Beast
could not proceed.
His momentum was
stalled. The successors of
the scholars of
Gondhishapur, who possessed
the remnants of
brilliance, found their way to
the great court of
Baghdad in the 9th century,
which was ruled by Harun
al-Rashid and his wise
minister. A
scintillating culture of scientific
discovery and artistic
endeavor emerged during
a time when Europe
was still rather barbaric.

The
Fourth Crusade was called by Pope
Innocent III
(r. 1198-1216 CE) to retake
Jerusalem
from its current Muslim overlords.
However, in a
bizarre combination of cock-ups,
financial
constraints, and Venetian trading
ambitions,
the target ended up being
Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire
and the
greatest Christian city in the world.
Sacked on 12
April 1204 CE, Constantinople was
stripped of
it's riches, relics, and artworks, and
the Byzantine
Empire was divided up between
Venice and
its allies. The Fourth Crusade thus
gained its
infamous reputation as the most
cynical and
profit-seeking of all the Crusades.

matter originates and exists only by
virtue of a force which brings the

the existence of a conscious and
